Both are API gear oil service classifications. GL-4 is designed for spiral-bevel and hypoid gears at moderate speeds and loads and can be used in selected manual transmissions and transaxles. GL-5 is designed for gears, particularly hypoids in automotive axles, under high-speed shock load and low-speed, high-torque conditions. The correct level depends on the OEM specification of the gearbox or axle, so always check the vehicle manual before choosing.
Not as a blanket rule. The two levels are not interchangeable in every gearbox, and some manual transmissions are specified by the OEM for GL-4. Follow the OEM-specified API level and SAE grade. If the OEM calls for GL-4, choose a product whose rating list includes GL-4, such as Special Gear LD/LS 75W-90, Uni Gear Oil MT/LD 75W-80 or Uni Gear 85W-140.
Limited-slip differentials need controlled friction behavior inside the differential, so LS gear oils are formulated with limited-slip properties on top of extreme-pressure protection. TERZO Special Gear LD/LS 75W-90 and Uni Gear 85W-140 are formulated with limited-slip properties. For clutch-type differentials, confirm the OEM fluid specification.
75W-90 is the all-season multigrade for manual gearboxes and differentials and the widest-use grade for mixed passenger and truck fleets; its SAE J306 low-temperature limit is −40 °C. 80W-90 is a heavier grade with a −26 °C limit, suited to hypoid differentials under heavy-duty conditions where very low temperatures are not a concern. 85W-140 is the highest-viscosity grade in the range (−12 °C limit), intended for heavy-load, high-temperature axles. 75W-80 (Uni Gear Oil MT/LD) is a lower-viscosity grade for heavy-duty manual transmissions with extended-drain and fuel-economy requirements. Grade choice always follows the OEM specification.
Passenger car gear oils come in 1L and 4L; MP Gear Oil and Gear Oil 80W-90 in 18L and 20L; Uni Gear Oil MT/LD 75W-80 and Uni Gear 85W-140 in 20L and 200L.
